The Sheridan Libraries and the Welch Medical Library of Johns Hopkins University are pleased to announce the availability of the Johns Hopkins Libraries Open Access Promotion Fund. The intent of the fund is to promote open access publishing by Hopkins researchers by reimbursing the author fees often required by open access publishers. The fund consists of a set amount of monies that will, on a yearly basis, be disbursed until depleted.

Use of case reports and the Adverse Event Reporting System in systematic reviews: overcoming barriers to assess the link between Crohn's disease medications and hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma
(BioMed Central, 2013-07-05)BACKGROUND: To identify demographic and clinical characteristics associated with cases of hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) in patients with Crohn's disease, and to assess strength of evidence for a causal relationship ... -
Patient-reported assessment of functional gait outcomes following superior gluteal artery perforator reconstruction
(American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2013-08-14)BACKGROUND: Harvesting the superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP) flap involves dissection of vessels through the gluteal muscle, potentially compromising gait and ambulation. We compared patient-reported gait and ... -
Positive effect of neurolysis on diabetic patients with compressed nerves of the lower extremities: a systematic review and meta-analysis
(American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2013-07-02)BACKGROUND: Despite proven benefits of upper extremity nerve decompression in diabetics, neurolysis for diabetic patients with lower extremity (LE) nerve compression remains controversial. METHODS: A search of ... -
Increased flap weight and decreased perforator number predict fat necrosis in DIEP breast reconstruction
(American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2013-05-28)BACKGROUND: Compromised perfusion in autologous breast reconstruction results in fat necrosis and flap loss. Increased flap weight with fewer perforator vessels may exacerbate imbalances in flap perfusion. We studied deep ... -
Preoperative anemia and postoperative outcomes in immediate breast reconstructive surgery : a critical analysis of 10,958 patients from the ACS-NSQIP database
(Plastic and reconstructive surgery. Global open., 2013-08-06)Background: Preoperative anemia is independently associated with adverse outcomes after general and cardiac surgery. Outcomes after breast reconstruction are not established. We assessed the effect of preoperative ... -
Violence against women in sex work and HIV risk implications differ qualitatively by perpetrator.
(BioMed Central, 2013-09-23)BACKGROUND: Physical and sexual violence heighten STI/HIV risk for women in sex work. Against this backdrop, we describe the nature of abuse against women in sex work, and its STI/HIV implications, across perpetrator ... -
Cutaneous collateral axonal sprouting re-innervates the skin component and restores sensation of denervated Swine osteomyocutaneous alloflaps.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-10-18)Reconstructive transplantation such as extremity and face transplantation is a viable treatment option for select patients with devastating tissue loss. Sensorimotor recovery is a critical determinant of overall success ... -
Morphological characterization of bushy cells and their inputs in the laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) anteroventral cochlear nucleus.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-08-26)Spherical and globular bushy cells of the AVCN receive huge auditory nerve endings specialized for high fidelity neural transmission in response to acoustic events. Recent studies in mice and other rodent species suggest ... -
Sympathetic innervation during development is necessary for pancreatic islet architecture and functional maturation.
(Cell Press, 2013-07-25)Sympathetic neurons depend on target-derived neurotrophic cues to control their survival and growth. However, whether sympathetic innervation contributes reciprocally to the development of target tissues is less clear. ... -
A horizontal alignment tool for numerical trend discovery in sequence data: application to protein hydropathy.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-10-10)An algorithm is presented that returns the optimal pairwise gapped alignment of two sets of signed numerical sequence values. One distinguishing feature of this algorithm is a flexible comparison engine (based on both ... -
Sexual and gender-based violence in areas of armed conflict: a systematic review of mental health and psychosocial support interventions.
(BioMed Central, 2013-08-05)BACKGROUND: Sexual and other forms of gender-based violence are common in conflict settings and are known risk factors for mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. We present findings from a systematic review of the ... -
CD36 and Fyn kinase mediate malaria-induced lung endothelial barrier dysfunction in mice infected with Plasmodium berghei.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-08-15)Severe malaria can trigger acute lung injury characterized by pulmonary edema resulting from increased endothelial permeability. However, the mechanism through which lung fluid conductance is altered during malaria remains ... -
Longitudinal changes in intracardiac repolarization lability in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
(Frontiers Research Foundation, 2013-08-12)Background: While it is known that elevated baseline intracardiac repolarization lability is associated with the risk of fast ventricular tachycardia (FVT)/ventricular fibrillation (VF), the effect of its longitudinal ... -
Triglyceride/HDL ratio as a screening tool for predicting success at reducing anti-diabetic medications following weight loss.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-07-15)BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intentional weight loss, by reducing insulin resistance, results in both better glycemic control and decreased need for anti-diabetic medications. However, not everyone who is successful with ... -
Bacterial expression strategies for several Sus scrofa diacylglycerol kinase alpha constructs: solubility challenges.
(Nature Publishing Group, 2013-04-05)We pursued several strategies for expressing either full-length Sus scrofa diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) alpha or the catalytic domain (alphacat) in Escherichia coli. Alphacat could be extracted, refolded, and purified from ... -
A multi-level system quality improvement intervention to reduce racial disparities in hypertension care and control: study protocol.
(BioMed Central, 2013-06-04)Abstract BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in blood pressure control have been well documented in the United States. Research suggests that many factors contribute to this disparity, including barriers to care at ... -
Individual and contextual factors of influence on adherence to antiretrovirals among people attending public clinics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
(BioMed Central, 2013-06-13)BACKGROUND: There are inconsistencies in the determinants of adherence to antiretrovirals (ARVs) across settings as well as a lack of studies that take into consideration factors beyond the individual level. This makes ... -
Development of a screening tool to identify female survivors of gender-based violence in a humanitarian setting:qualitative evidence from research among refugees in Ethiopia.
(BioMed Central, 2013-06-12)BACKGROUND: High levels of gender-based violence (GBV) persist among conflict-affected populations and within humanitarian settings and are paralleled by under-reporting and low service utilization. Novel and evidence-based ... -
ClinicalTrials.gov registration can supplement information in abstracts for systematic reviews: a comparisonstudy.
(BioMed Central, 2013-06-18)BACKGROUND: The inclusion of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reported in conference abstracts in systematic reviews is controversial, partly because study design information and risk of bias is often not fully ... -
Mechanisms of Siglec-F-induced eosinophil apoptosis: a role for caspases but not for SHP-1, Src kinases, NADPH oxidase or reactive oxygen.
(PLoS Organization, 2013-06-28)Abstract BACKGROUND: Siglec-F and Siglec-8 are functional paralog proapoptotic cell surface receptors expressed on mouse and human eosinophils, respectively. Whereas Siglec-8 mediated death involves caspases and/or ...
