Biodegradation of Chlorobenzenes under Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditions in Model Systems

Chlorobenzenes are one major class of pollutants in the water environment. Because chlorobenzenes have been produced extensively in the past century, this brings some spillage accidents throughout history, and the Standard Chlorine of Delaware Superfund site is one of them. The final goal of this research is to develop and investigate a bio-barrier to remove chlorobenzenes from the slow moving ground water contaminated by chlorobenzenes. In this thesis, the experimental setup was tested and optimized. Methods of detecting concerned chemicals in the experiment was explored and developed; methods of maintaining the anaerobic condition in the influent was explored and developed; modeling of the oxygen concentration distribution and the chlorobenzene concentration distribution in the column was done using COMSOL Multiphysics software.
